Characterization of reflector geometry

Short description

Geometric characterization determines how much energy will reach the solar receivers  as a function of the reconstructed shape of the collector surfaces (considering mirror quality) and comparing it to the amount of energy that would arrive at an ideal solar receiver  under similar circumstances.

Methodology and Experimental setup for photogrammetry and deflectogrametry in order to characterize the reflector shape in the solar field.

  • Heliostats and Reflectors geometrical characterization (Facets Shape Error, Heliostat / Collector Canting Error).
  • The Fringe Reflection technique is considered to be an effective, reliable and robust non-contact optical method for characterizing specular surfaces.

PTC modules and heliostats are characterized to accurately determine the real geometry of the mirror shape. The infrastructure available can easily be moved to the desired location, making it highly flexible. The technique uses a high-resolution camera, coded targets and a specific software for post-processing specialized in analyzing the data acquired.

Main technical features

Results generated by the tool offer quality parameters such as:

  • Slope Deviation in x- and y -direction (SDx and SDy)

Geometric characterization done taking different heliostat positions and wind conditions into account to analyze the errors caused by gravity and wind loads.

Innovative aspects

  • Fast characterization
  • Adaptable to different focal length
